This piece was made slowly, in my rural cabin in northern British Columbia, with deep respect for the history stitched into traditional quilts.
The North Carolina Tulip is a classic appliqué motif rooted in early American and Appalachian quiltmaking. Its bold, stylized floral form was historically used to bring beauty and meaning into the home—often made from limited materials, yet designed to last. I’m drawn to its strong symmetry and folk-art simplicity, and to the way it feels both decorative and enduring.
For this piece, the fabric was hand dyed using natural indigo, then carefully modified to achieve a soft, grounded sage green. The subtle variation in color is a hallmark of natural dyeing—quiet, organic, and impossible to replicate exactly.
The appliqué is machine stitched for durability, then finished with big stitch hand quilting, adding visible texture and gentle movement across the surface. Nothing here is rushed. Each step—from dyeing to stitching to finishing—is done with intention.
The result is a wall hanging that feels calm, familiar, and steady—meant to be lived with, not treated as precious.
