The traditional Sawtooth quilt block made its first known published appearance in the Farm & Fireside periodical in 1884 from Springfield, Ohio. Like many historic quilt blocks documented by quilt historian Barbara Brackman, the design likely existed long before it appeared in print, passed between quilters through community and tradition.
The Sawtooth Star became beloved for its bold geometric shape, movement, and versatility.
