The May Collection — The First Official One Trick Pony Release
There’s something a little terrifying about finally sharing the thing you’ve been quietly building behind the scenes.
For months now, I’ve been drafting patterns for products I wanted to include in the collections, choosing colors, sewing, quilting, ripping seams out, reworking proportions, testing fabrics, photographing pieces in every scrap of sunlight I could catch in the cabin… all while wondering if I was completely out of my mind for starting another creative venture.
But here we are.
The very first official One Trick Pony Goods collection launches this week, and honestly? I could not be more excited.
The May Collection is built around one of my favourite colour pairings I’ve ever worked with — a mossy avocado green and soft white. It feels earthy, heritage-inspired, practical, comforting, and quietly beautiful all at once. Like old quilts hanging on a line. Like enamel mugs and worn leather boots. Like something useful that slowly becomes part of your everyday life.
This first collection is intentionally modest. Small on purpose. Thoughtful. Every piece was designed to be both useful and giftable — things meant to be carried, used, loved, and eventually worn soft with time.
Inside the collection you’ll find:
Quilted toiletry pouches with leather handles
Boxy makeup bags
Quilted totes in varying sizes with genuine leather straps and metal rivets
Book sleeves with satin ribbon ties
E-reader sleeves with zip closures
Everything is handmade in limited quantities and made to order only until June 27th. After that, this collection closes for good and a completely new collection will take its place.
That’s one of the things I’m most excited about with One Trick Pony.
A fresh collection every single month.
New colours.
New quilt blocks.
New combinations.
New experiments.
It keeps the work exciting for me as a maker, but it also means every collection feels a little special and fleeting — almost like small seasonal chapters.
For this very first release, I started with three quilt blocks I return to again and again: Broken Dishes, Sawtooth Star, and Half Square Triangle units.
Not because they’re trendy.
Because they’ve endured.
They’ve survived generations of makers because they work. They’re practical, beautiful, timeless, and deeply rooted in quilting history.
The Broken Dishes quilt block first appeared in 1903 in the American Agriculturist (Western edition) and has remained a beloved traditional patchwork design ever since. I’ve completely fallen in love with its simplicity, movement, and timeless beauty. In this collection, the mossy avocado green paired with soft white patchwork gives it a clean, heritage-inspired look that somehow feels both classic and modern at the same time.
The Sawtooth Star first appeared in the Farm & Fireside periodical in 1884 from Springfield, Ohio. Like many traditional quilt blocks documented by quilt historian Barbara Brackman, it likely existed long before publication, passed hand to hand between quilters through community and tradition. Over time, it became one of the most recognizable blocks in American patchwork quilting — loved for its movement, geometry, and versatility. In these pieces, the earthy olive tones soften the boldness of the star and make it feel warm, wearable, and timeless.
And then there are Half Square Triangle units — HSTs — which began appearing in pieced patchwork in the late 1800s. They’re one of the simplest building blocks in quilting, but somehow they never get old. You’ll probably notice HSTs appear throughout much of my work because I’m endlessly drawn to their practicality and quiet beauty. They create movement and texture from such a simple shape, and paired with quilted cotton and warm leather details, they feel sturdy, timeless, and incredibly useful.
That word — useful — matters a lot to me.
I didn’t want this collection to feel precious or untouchable. I’m not one to save and never use like my Grandma’s precious crystal glass collection. I’d rather use than showcase; life is just too short not to enjoy what you have. Utility is very important to me.
I wanted pieces you’d actually reach for.
The tote you throw over your shoulder every morning.
The makeup bag tossed into a suitcase before a road trip.
The book sleeve that lives beside your bed.
The pouch that slowly collects the small bits of your everyday life.
The kind of handmade goods that become companions.
Every piece in this collection is machine quilted using premium quilting cotton and quality materials, then finished with thoughtful details like genuine leather straps, rivets, quilted texture, satin ribbons, zip closures, and hand stamped interior details inspired by old feed sacks and utility textiles.
One thing, well made.
That’s really the heart of One Trick Pony.
Not fast fashion.
Not mass production.
Not endless inventory.
Not contributing to the waste problem. (Just a side note: But I have re-used my daughter’s and my own leather straps on our totes dozens of times over the years when we wear out the fabric bodies! So, if you buy a leather strap tote, I’m very happy to re-make the fabric body. Just send me your straps!)
Just thoughtful, limited-run quilted goods inspired by heritage patchwork and made slowly, one collection at a time.
The May Collection is available now in limited made-to-order quantities through June 27th.
